Victoria Houston - Personal Statement

Having thoroughly enjoyed the academic study of physical education at both standard grade and higher I have chosen a degree that will enable me to combine theory with a physical application in the subject of sport. I am interested in studying further how the body and mind is affected by physical exercise and why some people have better genetics for sport than others. As I have got older I now understand there are many other aspects to the study of sport such as health and nutrition and am keen to find out how the many contributing factors lead to a successful career in sport. I have a passion for sport and have been involved in a number of sports from a young age. I want to use this passion in my chosen degree which will lead to a career in a subject which I have enjoyed studying.

I love many sports but my main passion is football. I have been playing football since I was ten. Playing football for this long has made me show dedication for something I really love and I will use this same dedication in my chosen degree. I love the team aspect of football and developed leadership skills during my time as team captain. I was selected for the SFA East Regional Development squad. I was also the first girl ever to be selected from my school for the Scottish Schools East Region Team at U15 level. Recently I was selected to play for the Clubs For Young People under 17 Scotland Team in the Rosebowl Tournament in Ireland, where we played England, Ireland and Wales. I was honoured and felt really proud playing for my country and receiving my first cap for Scotland.

I have played hockey, badminton and netball for my school. I have also played netball since the age of 10 and currently play for my school senior netball team. I have in the past enjoyed individual sports like gymnastics and trampolining. I started gymnastics at age three until I was 15 years old, first in a competition squad and later in a tumbling display team.

At present I am studying Sports Leader Higher at school and this has allowed me to get involved in coaching. I help take a first year gymnastics class. I also help at a school for children with special needs doing a Re-Bound Therapy Class. This is a trampolining class for children who are wheelchair bound to relax their muscles which can tense up from sitting in their chairs. I have loved my time spent with the children at this school and have found it very rewarding. My class are also organising a primary schools sports event for the local primary schools in my area. I have enjoyed learning about this management side to sport. I have recently completed my early touches football coaching badge and this has allowed me to help coach an under 15 boys' team and gain valuable experience in coaching football as I would like to coach a girls team at a later date. I will be assisting the coaches at my football club at a Perth and Kinross active schools day as part of a recruitment drive to get more girls into football. I also currently help coach the first to third year girls' netball team at my school.

Last summer 11 of my schoolmates and I went to Peru through World Challenge which I paid for myself. I saved money from my job as a paper delivery girl. This was a trip where good team work was necessary as we had to organise our own accommodation, food and money while we were there. During this trip we spent ten days in a village helping the locals build a house. We also spent five days trekking in the Andes. The trek was hard going but I coped really well, my fitness from my sport certainly showed in this task. The whole trip was for a month and it was an amazing experience and one I will never forget.

I am really looking forward to university life and I hope I have shown the dedication and enthusiasm I will give to the course.

Coaches Comments

REPORT 1

Subject Victoria Houston :

As the International coach for Cyp Scotland, I had the pleasure of having Victoria in my squad for the Rose Bowl Tournament, season 2011, held in Northern Ireland.

Victoria attended two trials prior to being selected for the final squad and performed well at both events. She stood out as a very versatile player who could play in both a defensive and attacking role.  She showed good pace and had the ability to read the game well. It became apparent early on in the trials that she could be a key part of the squad as she ticked a lot of the boxes and had many of the key attributes that we look for in a player during the selection process.

Once we confirmed the final squad we arranged several friendly matches and had a weekend training camp to help the squad bond and prepare for the tournament. Victoria displayed a terrific attitude at these games and training camp. She gave 100% at both the games and training sessions and also took on board instructions and held her position well. I would say she was a very enthusiastic player who is comfortable on the ball and can turn defending in to attack very quickly and can pass the ball well. Victoria has the potential to develop in to an even better player if she continues to work hard at training and use her skill and pace to punish teams.

As a coach Victoria made my job very enjoyable as she was always a pleasure to coach, willing to learn and bonded well with the other players and played the game with a smile on her face. One of the most important things to me is that the players enjoy playing the game and Victoria certainly seems to do that. She was always very polite and well behaved and was a credit to her team.

The only slight negative with Victoria is that you sometimes get a player that thinks they are better than they are well its the opposite with Victoria. She is a better player than she thinks she is and needs to be more confident (sure that will be an easy fix and rather it be that way than the other)

With her attitude Victoria will do very well in the future and I wish her all the best. I am sure she will have a long and successful football career.

REPORT 2

I have been asked to provide a reference for Victoria Houston.

I coached Victoria between the ages of 13-15 when she was part of my Regional Development Squad.

I found her to have a very open mindset and responded well to structured coaching.  Her attendance was very good and she was well supported by her parents.

She was a very personable girls albeit a bit shy when younger but I am sure her confidence has grown in her teenage years.

In respects to a playing level, she could have continued at the Regional Level but an injury and studies forced her to concentrate on her club game and training for re-hab.

She is was very fast, intelligent with the ball and respected all coaches and officials in her matches.

I would love to see Victoria get a chance to gain some new life skills and experiences in the USA.

Kind regards

REPORT 4

I have been asked to forward you my views on Victoria Houston both as a player and as a person.

I would first of all have no question of recommending her both as a dedicated player and as a team member dedicated to her team in many ways. We Clubs for Young People Scotland are a charity and when we were in the process of raising funds to take the team to Northern Ireland to participate in a Four Nations Tournament of the CYP countries. Victoria volunteered to donate her wages for the two month school holiday period to the appeal. That to me is total dedication to her team and probably sums up the type of person Victoria is. I would have no second thoughts to recommending Victoria for a soccer scholarship as she would be a credit to her family, you as her advisor and also to her country.

I hope these few words assist her in achieving her goal in being accepted for a soccer scholarship
